CenterStage Apprenticeships

When you come into the theater, you have to be willing to say, "We're all here to undergo a communion, to find out what the hell is going on in this world." If you're not willing to say that, what you get is entertainment instead of art, and poor entertainment at that.
— DAVID MAMET, Three Uses of the Knife

The CenterStage Apprentice Program welcomes applicants from qualified colleges and universities as well as beginning theatre professionals.  Apprentices gain experience at Hartford Stage by working side by side with staff members. An Apprentice should expect to work between 35 – 45 hours during an average work week with a larger workload during project specific weeks based on the needs of their department.  The CenterStage Apprentice Program is a full-time commitment for the duration of the season (varies by Department) and is designed to provide insight and hands-on experience for a specific technical or administrative area of the theatre.  All CenterStage Apprentices may be required to participate in activities of a department other than that of their initial assignment, depending upon the needs of the theatre.

Compensation/Housing

Apprentices earn a modest stipend, based on the department you will work closest with.  Housing may be available within walking distance of the Hartford Stage Theatre, Rehearsal Space, Costume Shop & Administrative Offices.  Most Apprentices are offered housing (one to a bedroom in a four-bedroom house, with a communal living room, kitchen and two baths) for a weekly fee.

Opportunity for Advancement

One function of the CenterStage Program is to serve as a training ground for future Hartford Stage staff members, as well as future colleagues in the American Theatre. Some current and former Hartford Stage staff members began as Apprentices, and were promoted to staff positions as their skills and abilities improved.

Some CenterStage Program Apprenticeships Include: Education Administration, Education (Teaching), Costumes/Wardrobe, Scenic Arts & Artistic/Literary Administration.

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED FOR THE 2009-2010 SEASON.

WE ARE NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2010-2011.
