Saturday Sampler Workshops

Pretend Together

Ages: 3-5 (parent or guardian must attend class with child)

Come play with your little one as we explore stories, songs and movement in this acting class created just for our littlest performers. Bring out your preschooler’s dramatic side! Each parent/guardian will stay with their child to help guide them through the class activities.

Creative Drama: Superheroes and Villains

Ages 5-7
October 28 – December 2, 2017 (No class on November 25)

Using the power of drama and imagination, students will transform into their favorite superhero or villain. They will learn the foundations of acting and make bold choices in creating strong characters as they plot against heroes and take over the world.

Young Actors Toolbox

Ages 8-11

Students will learn the foundations of acting: developing well-rounded characters, practicing proper vocal and movement techniques, and enhancing concentration and sensory awareness.

Students will hone their acting skills by exploring improvisation and writing, working together to create their own stories and bring them to life!

Mini-Production: Mirthful Myths!

Ages 5-8
September 23 – December 2, 2017 *
Saturdays: 10:00 – 11:15 am

Students will rehearse and perform a mini-production made up of fun versions of popular myths. In a mini-production, students work with a short script to develop characters, perform a story, and learn about the rehearsal process. The final performance will be a part of our share day.

Acting for the Camera

Ages 9+
September 23 – December 2, 2017 *
Saturdays: 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

This class will introduce young performers to the principles of acting for different genres through work on scenes and monologues from TV, film and stage. Students also will work on resume preparation, audition technique and the basics of text analysis. All levels welcome.

Production Class

Ages 9+

Saturdays: 1:00–4:00 pm

Students will rehearse and perform a full production for families and friends. Prior Hartford Stage class experience or audition required. Tech rehearsals Dec. 12-14, 6:00-8:30pm. Performances Dec. 15 at 7pm and Dec. 16 at 2pm.

Work one-on-one with one of our teaching artists!  Lessons will be scheduled by appointment only in 30 minute sessions.  Attention will be given to voice and speech work, character development, physical acting, audition techniques and material selection.

Work one-on-one with an experienced voice instructor! Lessons will be scheduled by appointment only in 45 minute sessions. Students will be expected to practice at home between lessons.

Summer Studio Classes

All Summer Studio programs take place at Classical Magnet School*

*The final week of the Teen Musical program will take place at Hartford Stage.


Summer Studio Teen Musical

Ages 14-19
July 10-August 11 (with additional performances on August 12)

Teens will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform in a full production of Pippin, which will be performed in the Hartford Stage theatre in downtown Hartford.  Teens will participate in acting classes, electives and workshops with guest artists.  Students involved will also work as mentors for younger  students as a leadership building component of the program.


Summer Studio Youth Ensemble

Ages 9-15
July 10-August 4 (with additional performances on August 5)

Students are cast in either a musical or non-musical production. Students spend mornings rehearsing and afternoons exploring elective classes of their choice. Once a week, the Youth Ensemble enjoys a field trip together. This year’s shows are Singin’ in the Rain, Jr. and Romeo and Winifred.


Summer Studio Children’s Cast

Ages 5-8 * Please note: to be eligible for the Children’s Cast, students must have completed Kindergarten
Session 2: July 24 – August 4

Session 2 is SOLD OUT!

Students will take classes in story theatre, creative movement, music, puppetry, and arts and crafts, and go on a weekly field trip. Each session ends in a mini-production that the cast creates based on favorite stories and characters.

One-Act Play

Ages 9-15
August 7-18

Young actors will hone their skills with training in the basics of acting and improvisation, working toward a production.


Summer Bookends

Ages 5-8
Session 1: August 7-11
Session 2: August 14-18
$310 per session/ $565 for both sessions

Close out the summer with drama and fun! Students will explore literature from summer reading lists through acting, musical theatre, creative movement and arts and crafts.

Day Dreamers

Ages 3-5 * Please note: our Day Dreamers Program is for Pre K students only.
Session 1: July 10-14
Session 2: July 17-21
Session 3: July 24-28
$180 per session, $310 for 2 sessions, $405 for all 3 sessions

Our youngest artists will enjoy a half-day of creative movement, music, story theatre, and puppet play!
