David & Janice Klein
Noble Shropshire
Hartford Stage is proud to present the 2026 Inspiration Award to David and Janice Klein and Noble Shropshire, recognizing their extraordinary contributions to the theatre and their shared commitment to inspiring generations of students through the power of live performance.
For decades, David and Janice Klein have been steadfast champions of Hartford Stage, providing visionary leadership, remarkable generosity, and an unwavering belief in the importance of arts education. Their support has helped expand access to theatre for young people, creating meaningful opportunities for students to experience storytelling that fosters empathy, creativity, and connection.
Noble Shropshire’s impact on students has been equally profound. Through his unforgettable performances—most notably his portrayal of Marley/Mrs. Dilber in A Christmas Carol, experienced by more than 100,000 students—he has introduced countless young people to the magic of live theatre, often for the very first time. His artistry and dedication have made him a beloved figure on the Hartford Stage and an inspiring presence in the lives of students and audiences alike.
This year’s award also marks a special moment as Noble Shropshire retires from a distinguished acting career, celebrating a legacy defined not only by artistic excellence but by a deep and lasting educational impact.
Together, the Kleins and Noble Shropshire embody the spirit of the Inspiration Award—demonstrating how leadership, generosity, and artistry can open doors for young people and ensure that theatre remains a vital and transformative force in our community.
2021
Hartford Public Library
The Hartford Public Library was selected as the first award recipient in recognition of its successful community partnership with Hartford Stage, and the ways it has helped connect us more authentically to our neighbors, welcoming new theatre-goers and more diverse audience members into our space.
Hartford Stage partnered with the Hartford Public Library beginning in 2018 to create a program inviting Hartford residents to attend shows at the theatre, free of charge. Through the Library Pass Program, which debuted with Feeding the Dragon, Hartford residents with an adult or teen library card can reserve a two-ticket pass per eligible show from any of the seven library branches in the city. Since its inception, nearly 3,000 Hartford residents have enjoyed free performances at Hartford Stage.
