A Christmas Carol

Meet the Artist – Derric Harris, Associate Choreographer

By Sally Lobel, Artistic Apprentice

Derric Harris is a dancer and choreographer who has been the Associate Choreographer for A Christmas Carol–A Ghost Story of Christmas at Hartford Stage since 2011. Below, Derric discusses dance, storytelling, and holiday memories.

How did you become a choreographer?

I was a professional dancer for a couple of decades. During that time, I was blessed to work with numerous amazing choreographers; among them Hope Clarke, the choreographer for this production.  After I left concert dance and started doing more musical theatre, I was often given the added responsibility of being the dance captain. So, my progression/transition into the role of choreographer, many would say, was the logical next step.

How does dance help tell the story of A Christmas Carol?

One of the things I love about this production is that the introduction of the ghostly apparitions helps tell the story.  In addition to adding an undercurrent of energy, tension and motion to the play, they are also, at times, a physical manifestation of Scrooge’s inner turmoil.

What is it like to work on a show that’s a yearly tradition?

I look forward to coming back every year for many reasons. This production feels like a family!  I LOVE working with Rachel (Alderman, Director) and Martin (Lechner, Stage Manager). I am honored that Hope has entrusted me with the responsibility of remounting her vision. Additionally, I get to mentor the Hartt [School] students while teaching them the show.

Can you share a favorite holiday memory?

My favorite Christmas memory has to be from my freshman year in university. My mother passed away 11 months later, but the joy she displayed when she opened my gift to her was priceless and is forever etched in my mind.
